The News Group, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2007, has been a leader in the Canadian magazine and book wholesale industry since it began operations in Hamilton, ON on November 26, 1907. E.H. O’Brien founded the company by delivering the Toronto Daily Star as a part-time operation with ten news dealers in Hamilton. From those early deliveries, coupled with our commitment to excellent customer service, The News Group has survived and grown to become the dominant magazine and book wholesaler in Canada. The News Group-Canada has earned a market share of over 50% in magazines and over 40% in our core retail book markets. The News Group services the periodical needs of its key customers – including Loblaws, Shoppers Drug Mart, Chapters-Indigo-Coles, Safeway, London Drugs, 7-Eleven and the Overwaitea Food Group. In 2007, Loblaws, Canada’s largest grocery retailer, awarded The News Group responsibility for the chain’s complete book supply in Western Canada. With this new business, The News Group became the second largest book purchaser and largest book distributor in the country.
Both directly, and through joint ventures operating in Ontario and the Canadian Prairies, The News Group supplies over 7,600 retail stores located in all of Canada’s ten provinces and three territories, making us the country’s only fully national periodical wholesaler.
