Overwaitea Food Group is First and Only Grocer to Get a Passing Grade from Greenpeace
June 2, 2010
Greenpeace’s Annual Taking Stock Report ranks Canadian supermarkets on seafood sustainability, including Canada's eight major grocery chains. Western Canada’s Overwaitea Food Group (OFG), received the report’s highest overall score – and is the first and only retailer to receive a passing grade.
As part of a commitment to giving customers more sustainable seafood choices, in June 2009, OFG announced its 6 point Sustainable Seafood Plan in conjunction with Canada’s SeaChoice program, which ranks seafood sustainability using a simple rating system and provides customer education and awareness.
Since then, OFG has de-listed a number of threatened species, developed an industry-leading reference guide for customers and team members and introduced new sustainable choices for customers, including Western Family Spot Prawns which are trap-caught in local waters and land-farmed SweetSpring Salmon.
