September 2, 2009

On September 2, the doors opened at Overwaitea Food Group’s (OFG) newest Save-On-Foods location. Save-On-Foods UBC is the first grocery store of its kind to operate on a Canadian university campus and a signature store for OFG with sustainable design features and an industry leading selection of food and health solutions.

Store opening festivities included a traditional blessing of the land presented by Elder Mary Charles of the Squamish First Nation and a performance by the UBC Thunderbirds Cheer Team. Special guest speakers included OFG owner Jim Pattison; President and CEO of UBC Properties Trust Al Poettcker; UBC President, Stephen Toope and former UBC governor, Robert Lee.

The 36,000 sq ft store will serve the growing community of UBC, offering a host of leading edge sustainable design features including sensor-operated lighting; sustainable flooring; and energy reduced refrigeration equipment endorsed by BC Hydro’s Power Smart High Performance Building Program.
