Media Release
There's some exciting news for the CFJC Television Newsroom and the Kamloops Daily News.
Last spring, both major news outlets put their competitive differences aside to present 'Seeing Red' -- an in-depth investigative series, focusing on the mountain pine beetle, its effects and what it would mean for communities in the future. The special news series resulted in 5 different reports that took news crews from Victoria to Prince George gathering footage, information and interviews with scientists, industry, and average people affected by the loss of the pine forest. The newspaper ran its own stories on alternating days, and both the TV news and the paper cross promoted each other’s pieces. The series concluded with a packed town hall meeting at Thompson Rivers University.
On October 22nd in Vancouver, CFJC Television and the Daily News were presented with a Jack Webster Award For Community Reporting for their excellent work. News Director Doug Collins, Assistant News Director, Sandy Heimlich-Hall, and reporter Tim Peeling were in Vancouver to accept the award.
Named in honour of one of BC's best known journalists, the Jack Webster Awards have recognized excellence in journalism since 1986. Nora Newlands, Executive Director for the Jack Webster Foundation, said she was pleased with the quality of this year's finalists and winners. Newlands said, "to win a Webster places you in the company of BC's best journalists".
